An Insider’s Look at the Kia Sportage HEV - Carr.pk

The Pakistani automotive landscape is shifting faster than a quick-release clutch. Gone are the days when your only choice was which shade of “Corolla” to pick. Today, tech-savvy owners are looking for sophistication, efficiency, and a break from the status quo.

In a recent PakWheels Owner Review, Suneel Munj and Hassan sat down with, a tech industry professional and self-proclaimed “car person,” to discuss his latest acquisition: the Kia Sportage HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle).

Hassan’s journey from luxury German EVs to a Korean hybrid offers a fascinating glimpse into what modern premium car buyers actually want.

The Road to the Sportage HEV

Hassan is no stranger to cutting-edge tech. His garage has seen everything from an Audi e-tron (his daily driver since 2020) to a Peugeot 2008 and even an Audi i5.

So, why the Sportage HEV?

Initially, the price tag was a deterrent. However, after a price drop and a personal recommendation from his brother, Hassan took the plunge, purchasing the top-of-the-line front-wheel-drive hybrid variant for approximately Rs. 11.8 million.

“I decided that since I usually buy on impulse, I should actually pay attention to what I’m buying this time. I wanted a car that checks all the boxes, not just a tool to show off a monogram.” Hassan added.

Performance and Mind-Blowing Mileage

The standout feature of the Sportage HEV is, unsurprisingly, its fuel economy. For a vehicle of its size, the numbers are impressive:

  • City Mileage: Hassan reports a staggering 21.6 km/l in urban traffic.
  • Highway Mileage: When cruising at speed limits, it maintains a solid 16–17 km/l.
  • Seamless Transition: The switch between the electric motor and the gasoline engine is described as “seamless,” unlike the clunky hybrid systems of yesteryear.

Interior: The “Cricket Bat” Aesthetic

Hassan, a fan of clean and functional design, praised the Sportage’s interior layout. He particularly noted:

  • The Dual Screens: The 12.3-inch curved displays (often nicknamed “cricket bats”) provide a high-tech feel without obstructing the driver’s view.
  • Harman Kardon Sound: As a music lover, Hassan highlighted the premium audio system and subwoofer as a major selling point.
  • Rear Comfort: The long wheelbase provides “limousine-like” legroom in the back, and the reclining seats make it exceptionally comfortable for passengers.

The ADAS Reality Check

Modern cars in Pakistan now come with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), but our local traffic adds a layer of complexity. Hassan shared his mixed feelings:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control: A total “100%” win for highway driving.
  • Emergency Braking: While it saved him money in Europe, Hassan finds it “intrusive” in Pakistan. A motorcycle swerving briefly into your lane can trigger a sudden, jarring brake that risks a rear-end collision from the car behind you.
  • The Parking “Struggle”: The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) can sometimes be too helpful, jamming the brakes when a parking attendant walks behind the car to help.

The Verdict: Maintenance and Value

While the car is a joy to drive, Hassan touched on a sobering reality: maintenance costs. Korean and Chinese brands, which initially disrupted the market with lower prices, tend to have more expensive spare parts and service intervals compared to traditional Japanese competitors.

What’s Missing?

Despite the high specs, Hassan has a small wish list for Kia:

  1. Memory Seats: A must-have for cars shared between a driver and owner.
  2. Manual Side Curtains: Useful for the harsh Pakistani sun.
  3. Ventilated Seats: While it has a heated steering wheel, ventilated seats would be more practical for the long summers.

Final Thoughts

The Kia Sportage HEV represents a bridge between the gasoline past and the electric future. For owners like Hassan, it offers the “green” perks of an EV with the long-range reliability of a hybrid, all wrapped in a premium, tech-heavy package.
