Capital Smart Motors Announces Setup of Local Assembly Plant
Islamabad: Capital Smart Motors (CSM) has officially announced the launch of its manufacturing and assembly operations in Pakistan. The company is establishing what it calls the country’s first New Energy Vehicle (NEV) CKD (Completely Knocked Down) production plant.
In an official statement, the company said:
“Now, we proudly step into the manufacturing phase! Phase 1 marks our takeover of a local facility for interim production, while Phase 2 begins with the groundbreaking of our very own state-of-the-art CKD manufacturing plant.”
If you’re not aware, Capital Smart Motors is a new entrant in Pakistan’s automotive industry that has introduced four Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands:
- RIDDARA, an all-electric pickup truck brand.
- ZEEKR, a luxury EV brand.
- FORTHING, whose Friday was Pakistan’s first REEV (Range-Extended Electric Vehicle) C-SUV.
- JMEV, whose ELIGHT was an all-electric sedan.
Until now, the company had been operating through CBU (Completely Built-Up) imports. However, it now appears that Capital Smart Motors is preparing to start local assembly of its models to cut costs and make its vehicles more competitive.
CSM also told PakWheels that once local assembly begins, the prices of the corresponding models will go down, as CKD units face lower taxes than imported CBUs. Read our next blog to find out which models these are.
Overall, the shift toward CKD production is a positive step for the company and the local automotive sector, as local assembly boosts the domestic industry and creates jobs.
