Chery Tiggo 8 1.6T full showroom gallery in Malaysia – non-Pro model is cheapest 7-seat Chery at RM129,800

Launched recently, the Chery Tiggo 8 (without the Pro suffix) is now the most affordable Chery with seven seats in Malaysia. At RM130k, it’s asking for RM30k less than both its Pro (this is on paper, before huge discounts) and PHEV brethren. In its sights are the RM119k-124k Jetour VT9 and RM124k-153k Proton X90 (facelift coming soon). Now that it’s hit showrooms, let’s take a closer look.

Yes, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Jaecoo J7 have lent their 1.6 litre turbo four-cylinder engine to this big guy here, so you now have a modest 197 PS and 290 Nm (see that new 290T tailgate badge? It’s 390T on the Pro) of torque. The gearbox remains a seven-speed DCT.

Comparatively, the Tiggo 8 Pro has a 256 PS/390 Nm 2.0 litre turbo engine, while the Tiggo 8 PHEV marries a 143 PS/215 Nm 1.5 litre turbo Miller-cycle four-cylinder engine to a 204 PS/310 Nm electric motor to give you a combined 275 PS and 365 Nm of torque.

The T8 looks familiar from the front, but the rear end has a different look thanks to lights that are no longer joined by an LED strip. The tail lamps themselves are also different, and the Chery script is placed higher. The quad pipes have been swapped for one tip on each side. The wheels are 18-inch items with 235/55 tyres (an inch down from the T8P’s 19s) but they still look adequate.

The dashboard also differs from the Pro’s conjoined screen horizontal layout. Here, the 10.25-inch digital meter and 12.3-inch infotainment screen live separately, and there’s another screen down below for the AC controls. The centre console has the same style as the Tiggo Cross. This older rear end and interior are similar to the Tiggo 8 that was previewed here back in 2022, although that car was a 2.0T ‘Pro Max’.

The dash design might be older, but the standard kit list still includes eight Sony speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, double-glazed acoustic glass, dual-zone auto air con, a powered sunroof with sunshade, a 360 camera, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, ambient lighting and powered front seats with driver-side memory. You can have your car in Dark Black or Khaki White.

In the safety department, the non-Pro gets six airbags instead of nine, with the driver knee unit and rear side bags sacrificed. The more basic ADAS pack is missing lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist – no Level 2, basically. Full spec sheet below.

The RM129,800 Tiggo 8 comes with a vehicle warranty of seven years/150,000 km, and an engine warranty of 10 years/one million km. Also in are five years of all-inclusive free service and a one-year Chery Insurance Programme.
