China’s New Door Handle Rule Could Shape Global Vehicle Design - Carr.pk

China will ban fully hidden and electronically-controlled car door handles starting January 1, 2027, a move aimed at improving vehicle safety and preventing emergency access issues.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), all new passenger vehicles sold in China must feature mechanical door handles with a manual release mechanism, except for tailgates. Hidden or fully electronic handles without mechanical backup will no longer be approved for new models.

The regulation, formally titled “Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handle Safety (GB 48001‑2026),” comes after reports that retractable or electronic-only handles hindered emergency rescues in accidents.

Manufacturers of vehicles already approved before 2027 have until January 1, 2029, to update their models to comply with the new standards.

Officials highlighted that the rule specifies interior handles must be clearly visible and operable, and exterior handles must provide sufficient hand-operable space for emergency access. Semi-flush or electronic handles with mechanical redundancy will still be allowed.

China’s policy is the first of its kind globally and is expected to influence international automotive design standards, as global automakers such as Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, BYD, XPeng, and Geely must redesign vehicles to comply with the new rule in China, the world’s largest automotive market.

Industry analysts predict the ban may drive a return to more traditional handle designs or hybrid solutions combining electronic aesthetics with mechanical safety, affecting electric vehicle designs, luxury cars, and future concept models worldwide.
