Cold Waves and Dense Fog Grip Pakistan: Travel Advisory Ahead - Carr.pk

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released its latest weekly weather forecast, warning of a continuing severe cold wave across most parts of the country, accompanied by persistent dense fog in plain areas. The update, issued on January 2, highlights mainly cold and dry conditions prevailing nationwide, with very cold temperatures in hilly regions.

According to the PMD, a westerly weather system that entered the country on December 29th is expected to persist in northern areas through the morning of January 2, 2026. However, dense fog is likely to continue disrupting daily life and transportation in the plains of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.

Detailed Weekly Forecast (January 2–8, 2026):

January 2–3: Mainly cold and dry weather expected across the country. Dense fog in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh. Very cold in northern hilly areas.

January 4: A shallow westerly wave may approach northern parts, bringing partly cloudy conditions with chances of light rain or drizzle in isolated upper areas. Cold and dry elsewhere; fog persists in plains.

January 5–6: Cold waves intensify in northern and central regions, with very cold nights. Possibility of light rain or snowfall in Murree, Galliyat, and northern Balochistan due to the cold waves coming from the west. Dense fog continues, potentially causing low visibility on motorways and highways.

January 7–8: Mainly cold and dry conditions return, with partial relief from fog in some areas. Very cold in hilly regions.

What Travelers Need to Know:

  • Dense Fog Hazards: Moderate to dense fog persists, especially during night and early morning hours, dropping visibility to near zero in plains. This has already caused partial or full closures on key motorways (M-2, M-3, M-4, M-5, M-11) and flight delays/diversions at airports like Lahore.
  • Safety Recommendations:
    • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially at night or early morning.
    • Prefer daytime journeys (10:00 AM to 6:00 PM) when visibility improves.
    • Use fog lights (not high beams), maintain extra distance from vehicles, and strictly follow lane discipline.
    • Check real-time updates via Motorway Police helpline (130) or PMD website.
  • Northern/Hilly Areas: Risk of slippery roads, landslides, or road closures due to frost or residual snow in places like Murree, Galiyat, and northern Balochistan.
  • Health Precautions: Vulnerable groups should limit exposure to extreme cold; frostbite risk increases in open areas.
