Punjab Govt Announces 1,500 More Electric Buses for Tehsils - Carr.pk

The Punjab government has announced the procurement of 1,500 green electric buses to expand public transport services across all tehsils of the province. The decision was reaffirmed by the Punjab Cabinet on January 23, 2026, during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

The move aims to extend affordable and eco-friendly transport beyond major cities. Therefore, electric bus services will now reach smaller districts and tehsil headquarters. Officials say this expansion marks a major shift toward inclusive and sustainable mobility.

Under the plan, the government will procure 1,000 new electric buses in the next phase. In addition, all buses will operate under a cashless payment system. The total fleet size will gradually reach 1,500 buses as deliveries continue.

The project is already in an active rollout stage. Previously, services were launched in cities such as Lahore and Rawalpindi. Meanwhile, districts like Jhelum received 15 buses in December 2025, while Pakpattan has also joined the network.

According to officials, around 1,100 electric buses are expected to be fully operational by early 2026. Moreover, an additional 400 to 500 buses will arrive by April or May 2026. This will complete the planned fleet.

Fares remain fixed at Rs20 per ride. However, students, senior citizens, and differently-abled passengers will continue to travel free of cost. Meanwhile, district administrations have been instructed to complete standardized bus stops in all tehsils to support the service.
