Europe’s EV Milestone: Electric Cars Overtake Gas Sales
In a groundbreaking milestone, battery-electric vehicles (EVs) outsold gas cars in Europe for the first time ever in December 2025, according to fresh data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
This breakthrough signals a rapid global transition to cleaner mobility, even as Pakistan ramps up incentives for hybrid and EVs amid high fuel prices.
December 2025 Milestone Numbers
According to InsideEV, Europe (EU, UK, EFTA) saw explosive EV growth last month:
- EVs: 308,955 registrations (up 50% YoY), including 217,898 in the EU alone
- Gas cars: 254,449 registrations (down 17.7% YoY)
- Hybrids: Still led at 380,921 units, but EVs closed the gap fastest
- Diesel: Barely over 70,000 units (down 23.1% YoY)
EVs captured 26.3% market share in the broader region, edging out pure gasoline at 21.7%.
Full-Year 2025 Trends
The momentum built throughout the year:
- EVs: Nearly 2.6 million registrations (up 29.7%)
- Gas cars: Dropped 18.9% to around 3.5 million
- Hybrids: Topped 4.6 million (up 12.4%)
Affordable models like the Renault 5 (starting ~$33,000) plus stricter emissions rules drove buyers away from traditional ICE vehicles.
Key Takeway
While hybrids remain the top choice overall and full-year gasoline sales still lead, the rapid growth of BEVs signals a clear long-term transition in the automotive industry toward greater electrification.
