First Snowfall of 2026: Murree Turns White, Link Roads Closed - Carr.pk

The first snowfall of 2026 has arrived in Murree and the surrounding Galiyat region, transforming the area into a winter wonderland but also creating challenges for travelers. As of today, January 1st, heavy snowfall and rain have continued for the third consecutive day across the northern areas.

The Department of Highways in Murree is working to clear essential routes and restore traffic flow.

  • Cleared Routes: Machinery has removed the highway from Kuldana to Barian.
  • Snow Accumulation: The intensity of the spell is evident, with Changla Gali reporting 1 foot of snow, while other areas in Galiyat have recorded approximately 10 inches.
  • Closures: The Abbottabad-Galiyat-Murree Road and several connecting link roads remain closed to traffic.

Safety Tip

If you are not in a 4×4 vehicle, snow chains are highly recommended for traction. Mechanical traction is the only way to prevent your car from skidding on icy slopes. Travelers are advised to check route statuses before heading out.

Pro tip: Buy snow chains in the plains (like Islamabad or Rawalpindi) before heading up, as prices spike once you reach the hilly areas.
