The Honda Timeline: Tracing The ‘H’ Through The Years - Carr.pk

Whether it’s a “Civic Reborn” making a statement or a “City” cruising through Gulberg, that silver ‘H’ on the grille is a badge of pride for every Pakistani Honda-baaz.

But did you know that iconic ‘H’ has just undergone its biggest change in over 20 years? We’re diving into the evolution of the Honda logo, from its humble beginnings to the brand-new 2026 design.

The Beginning (1961–1969): The “Tall” H

Long before the Civic was the king of the GT road, Honda’s first logo for four-wheelers looked very different. Debuting in 1961, it featured a thin, tall ‘H’ inside a burgundy-red rectangle.

It was experimental. Honda was just transitioning from being a motorcycle giant to a car manufacturer.

Fun Fact: At this time, Honda’s motorcycles already had the “Wing” logo, which is still legendary in Pakistan today (CD-70 lovers, you know the one!).

The Simplification (1969–1981): Going Monochrome

In 1969, Honda decided to ditch red and blue for a sleek black-and-white look. The ‘H’ became narrower at the bottom and wider at the top, almost like a trophy. This was the era of the first-ever Civic, the car that started the global craze.

The “Modern” Classic (1981–2000): The Square Frame

This is where the logo started looking like the one we recognize. The ‘H’ was placed inside a soft-edged square (the “shamisen” shape).

In 1981, they also added the bold “HONDA” text in that classic serif font we see on every dealership banner from Karachi to Peshawar.

The 3D Era (2000–2025): The Chrome King

If you own a Civic X or a Rebirth, this is your logo. In 2000, Honda went 3D. They gave the ‘H’ a metallic, silver finish with a subtle gradient to match the modern, sleek designs of the 21st century. It stood for reliability, “VTEC power,” and a bit of “shashka.”

The “New Era” (2026 – Present)

Just this week (January 2026), Honda officially announced a major rebrand. The new logo is a total throwback to the 1960s, but with a futuristic twist.

What’s New?

  • No More Border: The square frame is gone. The ‘H’ stands alone.
  • The Shape: It’s wider and more “open.” Honda says it represents two outstretched hands reaching out to the customer.
  • The Goal: This logo is specifically for Honda’s “0 Series” of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and upcoming Hybrids.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s the old-school badge on a modified ’95 Dolphin or the new minimalist ‘H’ of the future, Honda’s identity remains rooted in one thing: the joy of driving.

What do you think of the new “borderless” Honda logo? Is it a classic-to-be, or do you prefer the chrome square?
