After Karachi Manhole Tragedy, Islamabad Acts While Sindh Falls Behind
ISLAMABAD: The recent death of a 3-year-old boy in Karachi, after falling into an uncovered manhole, has reignited nationwide outrage over civic negligence. Past incidents in Lodhran have only added to the pressure for urgent safety reforms. Yet, while the Sindh government has faced heavy criticism for slow action and lack of enforcement, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration moved immediately.
ICT authorities have launched a citywide campaign to seal open manholes, focusing on high-risk areas along major roads, at intersections, and in commercial zones. The uncovered drains pose serious hazards to motorists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, often forcing sudden lane changes and causing traffic disruptions.
To ensure accountability, ICT officials warned that officers responsible for any uncovered manhole will face strict consequences. Residents are also urged to report hazards through official helplines, supporting ongoing efforts to improve road safety and maintain urban infrastructure standards.
The contrast between Islamabad’s rapid response and Sindh’s delayed enforcement has sparked public debate, with citizens questioning why proactive measures were not taken in Karachi before the tragedy struck.
