Imagining the Future: How Pakistan’s Young Artists Found a Global Voice Through the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest
Launched in Japan in 2004 by Toyota Motor Corporation, the Dream Car Art Contest has evolved into one of the world’s largest and most influential creative platforms for children.
Conceived to encourage young minds to imagine vehicles of the future, the competition invites participants under the age of 16 to express ideas around mobility, society, and sustainability through art.
What began as a cultural initiative linked to EXPO 2005 AICHI, Japan, has since grown into a truly global movement, attracting millions of entries from over 150 countries and regions.
At its heart, the contest is guided by a simple yet compelling belief: today’s dreams can shape tomorrow’s world. By nurturing creativity at an early age, the initiative seeks to inspire innovation, responsibility, and optimism for the future.
More than an art competition, it serves as a bridge between imagination and real-world impact sparking curiosity about technology, design, and how mobility can transform lives.
In Pakistan, this global vision has been carried forward with consistency and purpose by Indus Motor Company (IMC), reflecting its role as a responsible corporate citizen committed to youth development. Pakistan’s journey in the contest has been marked by steady progress and international recognition in Japan, beginning with a bronze medal at the 4th Dream Car Art Contest.
Over the years, Pakistani children have repeatedly reached global finals, achieving finalist placements for four consecutive years, with six artworks selected in finalist and best finalist categories. At the 13th edition held in Japan, Pakistan further strengthened its presence by securing two additional bronze medals.
Following a five-year hiatus after 2019, Pakistan made a strong comeback in 2025. At the 18th Dream Car Art Contest, held in Japan, young Pakistani artists once again captured global attention, winning two bronze awards reaffirming the country’s creative potential and resilience on an international stage.
This renewed momentum was celebrated locally on June 19, 2025, when Indus Motor Company hosted a Mega Award Distribution Event in Karachi to conclude the 18th national edition.
The ceremony brought together winning children, their families, educators, and IMC’s senior leadership underscoring the company’s seriousness in providing global exposure to Pakistani youth.
The presence of Mr. Ali Asghar Jamali, Chief Executive Officer, Indus Motor Company, alongside Vice Chairman Shinji Yanagi, sent a clear message: IMC’s commitment to nurturing young Pakistani talent extends beyond sponsorship to active leadership involvement.
Awards were presented across multiple categories, culminating in the announcement of the Top 9 National Winners whose artworks were forwarded to Japan for international evaluation.
A particularly defining moment of the event was the recognition of a national winner from the differently-abled community, reinforcing the contest’s inclusive ethos and IMC’s belief in equal opportunity.
“The Dream Car Art Contest reflects our belief that imagination is the foundation of innovation,” said Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO, Indus Motor Company. “The remarkable response from across Pakistan demonstrates the depth of creativity among our children.
At IMC, we are proud to provide a platform that connects young Pakistani minds with global opportunities and allows their ideas to be seen and celebrated in Japan.”
The scale of participation highlights the initiative’s impact. Pakistan’s 18th edition received 25,324 artworks from 1,118 schools, including 253 underprivileged and special-needs institutions, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total participation. Globally, the contest drew over 710,000 entries from around 90 countries, with final exhibitions and recognition held in Japan.
From classrooms across Pakistan to exhibition halls in Japan, the Dream Car Art Contest stands as a powerful reminder that the future is not only engineered it is imagined.
