Islamabad Extends M-Tag Installation Deadline for Vehicles
The deadline for installing M-Tags on vehicles in the federal capital has been extended by 15 days, officials confirmed. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, speaking at the newly inaugurated Shaheen Chowk underpass, said the extension was requested by the state minister for interior, whom he described as an “awami minister.”
Mr Naqvi also provided an update on the Smart City Project, confirming its completion is expected in 2026. The project aims to centralize key citizen services, including Rescue 1122, traffic management, security operations, and Capital Development Authority (CDA) services, under one integrated system.
Earlier, authorities had announced that vehicles without M-Tags would be barred from entering Islamabad starting January 1 to enhance security. So far, the ICT administration has established 16 facilitation points across the city, issuing nearly 100,000 M-Tags between November 14 and December 29. After January 15, vehicles without M-Tags will be tracked through tag readers installed at key entry points and checkpoints.

The M-Tag system, initially introduced by the National Highways Authority (NHA) for motorway toll management, allows cashless payments, fast-lane access, and queue-free movement. Each M-Tag in Islamabad is being issued for Rs250, and motorists without tags may face penalties.
During his media briefing, Mr Naqvi also reiterated that the Safe City Project will be completed in 2026. He highlighted ongoing reforms in surveillance and public safety measures, emphasizing that advanced technology and integrated security systems are vital for making Islamabad a model smart and safe city.
