Islamabad’s Electric Buses Hit 102,000 Riders a Day - Carr.pk

In a major leap for urban mobility, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced that Islamabad’s electric bus service has reached full operational capacity across all 21 designated routes.

The initiative, part of the city’s push to become a “Green City,” recorded a ridership of over 102,000 citizens in a single day this week.

During a high-level review chaired by Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, officials confirmed that the infrastructure supporting the eco-friendly fleet is nearly complete.

Key Developments in Islamabad’s Electric Bus Project

Infrastructure Nearing Completion – Construction of specialized electric bus depots is in its final stages. While Site-A is already operational, the remaining depots are 97% complete, ensuring smooth charging and maintenance for the city’s 160-bus fleet.

Expanded Route Network – All 21 routes are fully functional, connecting key areas such as G-9 to Faizabad and Nilor to Khanna Pul. These routes also act as feeder links to the Metro Bus network, covering the Red, Orange, Blue, and Green lines.

Digital Integration – To improve commuter experience, bus timings and routes are integrated with Google Maps. A cashless payment system using QR codes and digital wallets is being rolled out at all terminals, supporting the Digital Islamabad vision.

Environmental Impact – Transitioning to an electric fleet is expected to significantly reduce Islamabad’s carbon footprint. Chairman Randhawa emphasized that all future departmental vehicle procurement will prioritize electric vehicles to combat urban pollution.

Commitment to Quality and Efficiency

The CDA has directed engineering and IT teams to ensure 24/7 operational charging stations, preventing service disruptions. Chairman Randhawa also highlighted the early-stage feasibility of an electric tram project, which could further expand sustainable transport in the city.

Additionally, LED information boards will be installed at all 216 bus stops, providing commuters with live arrival updates and route maps, improving convenience and accessibility.
