Jaecoo J5 First Look Review: Best Value For Money Hybrid SUV?
The Pakistani SUV market is expanding rapidly, and Jaecoo has once again made headlines with the launch of the Jaecoo J5, its most affordable hybrid SUV to date. After introducing the all-electric J6 and the plug-in hybrid J7, Jaecoo, backed by the Nishat Group in Pakistan, has now entered the mainstream hybrid segment with the J5, a sub-compact hybrid SUV.
This car aims to close the long-standing price gap between sedans and SUVs, a gap that widened significantly after currency depreciation. On paper, the J5 looks like a strong value proposition. Here is a detailed first-look review by Suneel Munj:
Jaecoo J5 Overview
The Jaecoo J5 is a self-charging hybrid (HEV) powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 1.83 kWh battery. Jaecoo calls this setup its Super Hybrid System (SHS), developed by its parent company, Chery.
The J5 is available in two variants:
- Comfort (Base Variant)
- Premium (Top Variant) – reviewed here
Exterior Design: Range Rover-Inspired Styling
There is no hiding the inspiration here. The Jaecoo J5 strongly resembles the Range Rover Evoque, especially from the front.
Key Exterior Highlights:
- Signature waterfall-style front grille
- Full LED headlights (Premium variant)
- Vertical design elements in the front and rear bumpers
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Concealed-style door handles
- Roof rails
- LED tail lamps with a modern, premium look
- SHS (Super Hybrid System) badging
The bold grille and upright design give the J5 a bulkier road presence, making it look more expensive than it actually is.
Boot Space & Practicality
While the boot space is reasonable for the segment, it is not class-leading. Notably, the vehicle lacks a spare wheel, but comes equipped with a tire repair kit instead.
However, practicality is enhanced by additional storage space available under the boot floor and 60:40 split rear seats, while the Premium variant adds the convenience of a powered tailgate.
Interior Design & Cabin Quality
The cabin features a dual-tone interior in light grey paired with dark grey, complemented by soft-touch materials across the dashboard and carbon-fibre-style trim.
A premium-looking centre console, inspired by modern Range Rover interiors, anchors the design, while prominent ambient lighting offers 36 colour options to set the mood. Overall, the interior feels open, airy, and well-designed, defying the usual expectations of a B-segment SUV.
Infotainment & Digital Displays
The Jaecoo J5 places a heavy emphasis on technology, with a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that serves as the “brain” of the car. This central hub manages everything from driving modes to hybrid energy usage and controls multiple vehicle settings.
The setup is complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a clear hybrid energy flow display, and an 8-inch TFT digital instrument cluster as the primary display for the driver.
Safety & ADAS Features
One of the J5’s strongest selling points is its extensive ADAS suite, rarely seen at this price point.
Safety Features Include:
- 6 airbags
- 540-degree camera system (including transparent chassis view)
- Front collision warning
- Adaptive cruise control
- Emergency braking
- Lane departure warning & prevention
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alert
- Door opening warning
- Driver fatigue monitoring
Sensitivity levels for many systems can be customized, which adds to usability.
Seating Comfort & Space
The front seats offer excellent under-thigh and back support, featuring ventilation for both occupants and a 6-way power adjustment for the driver.
In the rear, the J5 provides good headroom and knee room for the segment, with a flat floor improving comfort for the middle passenger. Rear occupants also benefit from dedicated AC vents, USB ports, and a fixed glass roof.
For daily use, the J5 comfortably accommodates four adults, with space for five on shorter trips.
Performance & Fuel Economy
The Jaecoo J5 produces 221 horsepower and 295 Nm of torque, paired with a DHT transmission. While high performance is not its primary focus, the vehicle does not feel sluggish on the road. It boasts a claimed fuel economy of roughly 18 km/l, offering a potential range of up to 950 km on a 51-liter tank, though these figures will need verification through real-world testing in a detailed expert review.
Market Positioning and Price
The Jaecoo J5 is currently being marketed as Pakistan’s most affordable hybrid SUV.
- Comfort Variant: Entry-level pricing aimed at sedan buyers upgrading to an SUV
- Premium Variant: Feature-loaded, offering strong value for money

Final Verdict: Is the Jaecoo J5 Worth It?
The Jaecoo J5 makes a strong case for itself, offering an SUV stance at near-sedan pricing alongside strong claimed hybrid fuel economy, a premium interior, and extensive safety features.
With the added backing of the Nishat Group, improving long-term confidence, it stands out as one of the most sensible choices currently available in Pakistan for buyers looking to upgrade from a sedan without sacrificing efficiency.
While a full expert review with real-world driving impressions and fuel averages is still needed to verify its claims, as a first look, the J5 is undeniably impressive.
