Karachi Adopts Solar Solution for Street Lighting on Shahrah e Faisal - Carr.pk

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has initiated a large-scale solar street lighting project on Sharea Faisal as part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure and reduce reliance on conventional electricity.

The project, valued at around Rs900 million, involves replacing conventional streetlights with solar-powered units along one of the city’s busiest corridors. Officials say the initiative is expected to significantly cut electricity expenses, with annual savings estimated at approximately Rs25 million.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the administration’s development agenda for the coming year focuses on practical solutions aimed at improving daily life for residents. He added that infrastructure development and service delivery remain key priorities for the city government.

According to officials, the contractor responsible for the installation will also handle operations and maintenance under a multi-year warranty, ensuring consistent performance and reduced maintenance costs.

The mayor further noted that similar solar lighting projects are planned for other major roads, including Sir Shah Suleman Road and Mai Kolachi Road, while work is already underway on several infrastructure upgrades across the city.

Authorities say the shift toward solar energy reflects a broader push for sustainable and cost-effective urban solutions as Karachi faces rising energy costs and infrastructure challenges.
