Karachi CM Urges PM for Support to Restart KCR Project
The Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project once again came into the spotlight as Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for strong federal support.
Speaking at a ceremony held for the upgradation of the historic Cantonment Station, the chief minister said the provincial government cannot complete a project of this scale on its own.
Murad Ali Shah thanked the prime minister and Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi for showing interest in Karachi’s development, adding that better railway services would bring real relief to people who depend on public transport. He said that until the Karachi-Hyderabad motorway is fully functional, train travel remains the most dependable option for thousands of daily commuters.
The chief minister mentioned the provincial government’s recent steps to improve transport in the city, including electric buses, the People’s Bus Service, and pink buses for women. Yet, he stressed that Karachi still needs a proper mass transit system, and the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) is central to that plan.

Murad Ali Shah again urged the federal government to extend full cooperation, saying that provincial resources are not enough for a project designed to serve the country’s largest city. He assured that Sindh is ready to provide land, support, and coordination with other transport services.
The KCR is planned as a modern urban transit network aimed at reducing traffic pressure and offering a cleaner, faster way to move across the city. After years of delay, the project has regained importance due to Karachi’s growing population and rising demand for reliable transport.
