Karachi Expands Women-Only “Pink Bus” Service to Green Line Corridor
Karachi – The Sindh government has expanded its women-only “Pink Bus” service on the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit corridor. Inaugurated by Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh’s Senior Minister for Transport, the service now operates between Numaish and Surjani Town.
This initiative aims to improve accessibility for female commuters, addressing the challenges they face on public transport. The service will initially cover the Green Line, with plans to extend to the Orange Line in the future, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility, particularly for women.
Expanding Inclusivity in Karachi’s Transport Network
The Pink Bus service runs along one of Karachi’s busiest routes, connecting key areas like Numaish and Surjani Town. This expansion responds to the growing demand for safe, women-focused transport. Additionally, the Sindh government is introducing double-decker buses along Sharea Faisal next week and will offer free bicycles for children with disabilities, further improving accessibility across the city.
A Step Towards Gender-Inclusive Transport
Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon urged other provinces and the federal government to implement similar initiatives, calling the Pink Bus a step towards more inclusive transport. The service aims to provide reliable options for women who often face security concerns on regular buses.
Looking Ahead: Future Expansion
The Sindh government plans to extend the Pink Bus service to the Orange Line. Success will depend on factors like bus availability, security, and integration with Karachi’s broader transit network. If successful, the service could serve as a model for other cities in Pakistan, promoting safe, women-centric public transport nationwide.
