KP Launches Citizen-Owned Number Plates in Major Digital Upgrade
A new vehicle registration system has been introduced in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, under which a vehicle’s number will now belong to the citizen rather than the vehicle.
The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa officially launched the “Personalized Registration Mark System” (PRM), ensuring that even if a vehicle is sold, the old number will remain with the original owner.
According to excise officials, the new digital registration system will help eliminate fake and cloned number plates while making the vehicle registration process faster, transparent, and corruption-free.
During a briefing, it was explained that under the PRM system, citizens can own a vehicle number the same way they own a national ID or mobile number.
It was further stated that when a vehicle is sold, the old number will remain with the owner at no extra cost, while the buyer will need to apply for a new number. Citizens can keep their registration number reserved for up to three years without assigning it to any vehicle.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also announced a “Shaheed Package” for the Excise Department, similar to that of the police, to support anti-narcotics operations. He stated that there will be a strict crackdown on drug dealers with special attention to large networks, and the zero-tolerance policy will continue to make the province drug-free.
