KP Launches Personalized Registration Mark System
Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has officially revolutionized vehicle ownership with the launch of the Personalized Registration Mark (PRM) system. In a historic shift towards digitalization, vehicle number plates will now be the property of the citizen rather than the vehicle itself.
This new system, inaugurated by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, promises to streamline the registration process, eliminate cloning, and curb the use of fake number plates across the province.

What is the Personalized Registration Mark (PRM) System?
Under the previous regime, a registration number was tied to a vehicle’s chassis. If you sold your car, the number went with it. The PRM system changes this dynamic entirely:
- Ownership: The registration number is now linked to the citizen’s identity (CNIC). You own the number, not the car.
- Selling a Vehicle: When you sell your vehicle, the number plate remains with you. The buyer must apply for a completely new registration mark.
- Retention Period: Citizens can retain their personalized number for up to three years without attaching it to a vehicle. This is a massive relief for enthusiasts who want to secure a specific number while between cars.
- No Extra Fees: According to the Chief Minister, if a vehicle is sold, the number stays with the seller without any additional fee transfer costs.

Digitalization and Security
During the launch ceremony, CM Sohail Afridi emphasized that the PRM system is a critical step towards a transparent and corruption-free Excise Department.
“The new digital registration system will provide ease to the public and prove helpful in eliminating fake number plates and cloning,” said CM Afridi.
He further directed the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department to develop a comprehensive online system for vehicle registration, ensuring that citizens can handle these matters from the comfort of their homes.
Zero Tolerance on Narcotics
The event also highlighted the provincial government’s aggressive stance on drug control. Chief Minister Afridi praised the Excise Department’s ongoing efforts and announced that strict action would be taken against every individual involved in the drug trade—from street peddlers to the “big fish.”
To honor the sacrifices of the force, a “Martyrs’ Package” was also announced for Excise officials, ensuring they receive support comparable to other frontline security forces.
Why it’s Good?
For the average citizen in KP, this is a game-changer. It protects your investment in premium or “lucky” numbers and simplifies the buying/selling process. For the state, it creates a robust digital database that makes vehicle theft and cloning significantly harder to execute.
