KP Rolls Out Citizen‑Owned Vehicle Number Plates System - Carr.pk

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced a Personalised Registration Mark (PRM) System that fundamentally changes how vehicle number plates are managed in the province. Under this scheme, a registration number becomes the property of the vehicle owner rather than the vehicle itself, similar to how a CNIC or mobile number stays with a person.

This initiative follows a similar rollout of number plates in Punjab, where digital systems were also introduced to manage vehicle registration more efficiently and transparently.

With this reform, when owners sell a vehicle, they can retain their chosen number and keep it unused for up to three years. Buyers will need to obtain a new plate separately. Officials say this shift is designed to streamline processes and offer greater personal control over registration marks.

Digital Overhaul and Enforcement Benefits

The provincial government, led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, says the new digital platform is intended to make registrations faster, more transparent, and corruption‑free. The system also aims to reduce the misuse of fake or cloned number plates, a longstanding challenge for law enforcement.

This aligns with broader efforts to modernise motor vehicle regulatory systems, such as online services that help vehicle owners apply and track requests without visiting government offices.

What It Means for Vehicle Owners

  • Ownership stays with the person: Numbers no longer automatically transfer with the car.
  • Reserve numbers for up to 3 years: Owners can hold their number even without a vehicle attached.
  • Combat illegal practices: Officials expect better traceability and fewer cloned plates.

This system may also intersect with special or premium number plate auctions being explored in KP for distinctive registrations.

What’s Next

The PRM rollout marks a major step in vehicle registration reform in KP. Implementation details, such as the online application launch date and associated fees (if any), are expected to be published by the Excise Department soon. Vehicle owners across Pakistan and especially in KP, should monitor updates on this evolving policy.
