No Safety Rod, No Entry: Lahore’s Strict New Rule for Bikers
According to a recent directive issued by the Lahore Commissioner, Maryam Khan, no motorcycle will be permitted on the city’s roads during the three-day Basant celebration unless it is equipped with a protective safety rod or antenna.
This decision comes as part of the “Mehfooz Basant” initiative, aimed at reviving the cultural festival while preventing the fatal accidents caused by sharp kite strings that led to its 20-year ban.
Mandatory Safety Rods for All Bikes
Under the Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, the provincial administration has made the installation of safety wires or rods compulsory for all two-wheelers. These rods are designed to deflect stray kite strings, protecting the rider’s neck and face from life-threatening injuries.
To facilitate citizens, the government plans to set up 100 road safety camps across Lahore. These camps are expected to install approximately one million safety rods, with a daily capacity of fitting 50,000 to 60,000 motorcycles.
Restricted Zones and Helmet Requirements
The Lahore Police have also submitted a comprehensive 27-point security plan to the Lahore High Court. The city has been divided into Red, Yellow, and Green zones to monitor kite-flying activities effectively. Motorcyclists are strictly prohibited from entering “Red Zones” without a safety antenna.
Additionally, both riders and pillion passengers must wear helmets at all times. Authorities have warned that violators will face strict legal action, including potential vehicle impoundment and fines, as part of the zero-tolerance policy against safety breaches.
Takeaway for Motorcyclists
The government is moving swiftly to ensure a safe celebration. Motorcyclists should visit the designated road safety camps starting this week to have their safety rods installed. With the official festival dates confirmed for February 6–8, 2026, riders are advised to comply with these regulations early to avoid penalties or restricted movement during the festivities.
