Lahore Records 900,000 Vehicle Entries During Basant
Lahore experienced a significant increase in traffic during the three-day Basant festival, with over 900,000 vehicles entering the city and nearly 1.4 million passengers using public transport. Held under the oversight of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the event involved large-scale administrative coordination.
Massive Influx of Traffic and Commuters
According to official figures, around 900,000 vehicles entered Lahore via key entry points and highways during the Basant weekend. This led to increased traffic across major roads and city arteries.
Simultaneously, approximately 1.4 million individuals used public transport within two days, reflecting the heavy reliance on state-run transit services amid urban congestion.
Free Public Transport Continued
To support mobility during the festival, the Punjab government continued its free transport plan on the final day, enabling fare-free travel on 419 buses and over 6,000 Yango rickshaws.
The measure aimed to reduce pressure on road networks and assist commuters in the face of rising fuel costs.
CM Monitors Arrangements, Kite Ban Reinforced
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reviewed festival operations and noted the coordinated efforts of traffic, law enforcement, and district management teams. She noted that the event concluded without major disruptions.
The CM reiterated that kite flying is banned effective after the final day of Basant. The restriction is intended to minimize kite-related accidents and maintain public safety.
Focus on Logistics and Safety
The high turnout and operational execution reflected efforts to manage large public gatherings while maintaining order. Officials indicated that aspects of the transport plan may be reviewed for application during other mass events.
