Lahore Set to Split Into Two Districts to Fix Traffic and Civic Chaos
Lahore, the city of endless traffic jams and sprawling neighbourhoods, is getting a major administrative makeover. According to media reports, the Punjab government, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s green light, has approved the division of Lahore into two independent districts. Each district will have its own Deputy Commissioner, police leadership, and municipal setup.
The move aims to tackle problems that any Lahori knows too well: traffic snarls, encroachments, and slow civic responses. Officials say this two-district model will allow faster complaint resolution, smoother traffic management, and better municipal oversight, especially in high-density areas.
The split comes as Lahore’s population balloons and vehicle density spikes, putting immense pressure on city infrastructure. The government believes that separate district administrations will lighten the bureaucratic load and help authorities respond more effectively to everyday urban headaches like road congestion, parking issues, and infrastructure maintenance.
Preparations are already underway, with departments instructed to start work after the Basant festival. A follow-up meeting on February 9 will finalise jurisdiction boundaries and operational timelines.
For daily commuters and motorists, this could mean less time stuck in traffic, quicker resolutions to civic complaints, and a more responsive city government if executed well.
