Lahore to Install Smart Signals at 20 Busy Crossings - Carr.pk

LAHORE — The Traffic Engineering & Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) has launched a major initiative to modernize traffic management in Lahore. The project has received approval from the Punjab Cabinet and is supported by the provincial government. It will involve installing smart traffic systems and pelican (pedestrian-activated) signals at 20 key intersections across the city. This initiative is designed to reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian safety, and optimize traffic flow.

Details of the Project

The upgraded traffic management system will include the following key features:

  • Pelican Signals: Pedestrians will be able to activate the signals when they need to cross, reducing unnecessary delays for vehicles.

  • Smart Vehicle Detection Systems: Cameras and sensors will monitor traffic in real-time, adjusting signal timings based on traffic conditions. This will reduce congestion and minimize wait times for both vehicles and pedestrians.

  • Integration with PSCA and Traffic Police: The system will be linked to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) and local traffic police for centralized monitoring. This will help authorities quickly respond to incidents and traffic bottlenecks.

  • LED Lighting at Zebra Crossings: LED lights will be installed at zebra crossings to enhance pedestrian visibility, especially during nighttime or poor weather conditions.

Rationale Behind the Project

The main objective of the project is to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Pedestrians are often vulnerable at busy intersections, and this system is designed to create a more balanced flow between pedestrians and vehicles compared to traditional fixed-time signals.

The integration with Lahore’s Smart City infrastructure and PSCA’s monitoring systems will allow continuous data collection. This data will help traffic planners make informed decisions and fine-tune traffic management strategies over time.

Pilot Project and Phased Rollout

This initiative follows a successful pilot project on Mall Road, which aimed to address traffic congestion and long queues at major intersections. In the first phase, a European-style traffic management system will be implemented to ensure lane discipline and reduce traffic accidents. The installation of the modern signaling system is expected to begin soon.

Locations for the Upgrades

The new smart traffic systems and pelican crossings will be installed at the following 20 major roads and intersections across Lahore:

  • GPO Intersection

  • High Court Chowk

  • Regal Chowk

  • Governor House

  • Davis Road

  • Canal Road Junction

  • Zafar Ali Road

  • Fortress Stadium Intersection

  • Jinnah Chowk

  • Sarfaraz Rafiqui Road

  • Secretariat Intersection

  • Ferozepur Road

  • Muslim Town Mor

  • Bhekewal

  • Dubai Chowk

  • Barkat Market

  • Firdous Market

  • Askari 10

  • Parvez Aslam Chowk

These locations have been selected to address traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety in the busiest areas of Lahore.

Conclusion

The installation of smart traffic signals and pelican crossings is expected to alleviate congestion and enhance pedestrian safety in Lahore. With real-time data collection and integration into the Smart City infrastructure, the project aims to create a more efficient traffic management system. If successful, it will not only improve traffic flow but also reduce commute times and provide better protection for pedestrians.
