LLM: 3.27 mil vehicles expected on highways for CNY

The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is expecting traffic flow to increase as early as this Friday (February 13, 2026) before this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations. In an official release, the works ministry agency noted that traffic volume on highways could hit a peak of 3.27 million vehicles.

Major highways operated by PLUS Malaysia are expected to make up the bulk of traffic during the celebrations with 2.2 million vehicles, followed by the Karak Highway (210,000), East Coast Expressway (90,000 Phase 1, 40,000 Phase 2) and West Coast Expressway (160,000). Meanwhile, connecting highways like the DUKE, LATAR and LEKAS, which lead to major highways, are projected to see traffic volumes of 275,000, 145,000 and 150,000 vehicles respectively.

Before the expected traffic build up, LLM has instructed all toll concessionaries to implement specific measures meant to promote smooth and safe traffic flow. These include ensuring no lane closures expect for emergency works between February 12-23, activating SmartLanes at 32 locations on PLUS highways as well as ensuring toll collection systems are operating properly.

Toll companies are also instructed to ensure highways are operating properly, with functional facilities such as those found at R&R and stopover locations. Temporary toilets or cabins should also be prepared to meet the needs of users, with toilet cleanliness and sufficient water supply also being a priority. Additional parking facilities and personnel to manage traffic flow at R&Rs and stopovers are also on the to-do list.

As for road users, LLM advises them to refer to the travel time advisory to plan their journey. They should also make sure their vehicle is in good condition, have sufficient balance in their Touch ‘n Go account (card or eWallet) and debit cards (toll is 50% off on many highways between February 14-15 expect for a few) and pay attention to SmartLane zones. Motorcycle users will have as many as 571 dedicated shelter locations along highways.
