Major Upgrade Approved for Shaheen Chowk Underpass
Shaheen Chowk underpass will see major changes as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved a revised design to increase its size and improve traffic flow.
Officials said the updated plan will help ease daily congestion at the busy intersection of 9th Avenue and Khyaban-i-Iqbal, where motorists have long faced bottlenecks.
Under the new design, the CDA has extended the underpass barrel from 56 metres to 85 metres and added an extra lane to the roundabout. Two new U-turns have also been included to allow quicker access from different directions, making the Shaheen Chowk underpass more efficient for peak-hour traffic.
The authority said the changes fall within the 15% cost-revision limit allowed by procurement rules. Any small side works, such as service-road improvements, will be handled through separate tenders.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Rs. 1.3 billion project on October 24. While April was the initial completion target, officials now say the pace of work has put the project ahead of schedule. Once opened, the revised design is expected to significantly improve traffic movement in the area.
