Metro Bus Projects Approved for Faisalabad And Gujranwala - Carr.pk

The Punjab government has approved dedicated metro bus services for Faisalabad and Gujranwala, expanding its mass transit network beyond Lahore and Rawalpindi. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif during the inauguration of the Punjab Transport Company Headquarters and the EV Command & Control Centre in Lahore.

The move is part of a broader push to modernize urban mobility, reduce congestion, and promote environmentally friendly transport solutions across the province.

New Metro Projects to Improve Daily Commute

The Chief Minister emphasized that the upcoming metro bus services aim to make travel safer, more comfortable, and inclusive, especially for women, students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.

Both projects are expected to follow a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) model, with dedicated corridors, core routes, and feeder networks connecting major population hubs.

Officials hinted that rollout will begin soon, though exact launch timelines are yet to be confirmed.

Gujranwala Yellow Line and Faisalabad Corridors in Focus

  • Gujranwala: The planned Yellow Line Mass Transit System will use electric buses along a corridor stretching from Aimanabad to Gakhar. Some construction activity is already underway.
  • Faisalabad: The proposed network is expected to feature feeder and core BRT routes, linking key commercial and residential zones.

These developments reflect a significant shift in Punjab’s transport policy, extending mass transit access beyond megacities and into emerging urban centers.

EV Infrastructure Boosts Green Transit Push

At the newly launched EV Command and Control Centre, officials showcased facilities including:

  • A bus washing plant with water recycling
  • A high-capacity charging station capable of fully charging buses in 105 minutes

According to Punjab Transport Company CEO Kausar Khan, over 15.5 million passengers have used the province’s electric bus services. Many riders including women, students, and the elderly, benefit from free or subsidized fares under social inclusion programs.

Punjab’s Transit Network at a Glance

  • Existing Systems: Lahore Metrobus, Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus
  • New Additions: Faisalabad Metro, Gujranwala Yellow Line
  • Goals: Reduce emissions, ease congestion, increase accessibility

Punjab is now positioning itself as a leader in green public transit among Pakistani provinces, signaling long-term commitment to cleaner, smarter city transport.
