Motorbikes Banned for 3 Days in Lahore During Basant Celebrations
The Punjab government has conditionally allowed the return of Basant celebrations in Lahore, but with a strong focus on road safety and public protection, according to Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari.
In a recent video statement, Uzma Bukhari clarified that Basant will be permitted for only three days, with a strict motorcycle ban across the city. The move aims to revive the city’s cultural festival while avoiding the safety lapses that led to its past ban.
She stressed that kite flying will be allowed only in designated areas and that only kites of certain sizes will be permitted, while the sale of kites and strings will be closely monitored. Law-enforcement agencies and traffic authorities have been directed to remain on high alert to prevent accidents, particularly those involving motorcyclists and pedestrians, who have historically been the most vulnerable during Basant.
Why Road Safety Matters More Than Ever
Road safety advocates continue to underscore the risks Basant can pose to riders and drivers. A detailed PakWheels blog highlights long-standing concerns about dangerous kite strings, which have in the past caused injuries and sudden crashes among motorcyclists and other road users.
With the government also announcing free buses and rickshaw services during the festival days to reduce private vehicle use and congestion, the hope is that Lahoris can celebrate Basant safely, with minimized road dangers.
