Motorway Ban Lifting? IHC Considers New Rules for 600cc+ Motorcycles - Carr.pk

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has indicated that riders of heavy motorcycles, especially those with engines above 600cc, may soon be allowed back on Pakistan’s motorways. This comes with the condition that strict safety training and regulatory measures are implemented.

No formal order has been issued yet, but the court’s recent hearing signals a shift away from the previous ban.

According to APP’s report, motorway authorities informed the court that all prospective riders would need to complete mandatory training before being granted motorway access. New training centers will be set up in Islamabad and Sheikhupura for registration and licensing.

Background: A Legal Tug-of-War

This issue has been under legal scrutiny for years. In 2019, the IHC ruled that motorcycles with engines over 600cc could access motorways with restrictions such as age limits and safety gear.

However, the Supreme Court overturned this decision in 2022, reinstating the ban for public safety reasons and directing the IHC to reconsider with more robust regulations.

Safety Concerns and Enthusiast Support

While heavy motorcycles are favored by enthusiasts, safety experts have raised concerns about high-speed accidents and rider competence. The proposed training and licensing process aims to ensure riders can handle the powerful machines safely, addressing the issues that led to the Supreme Court’s ruling.

What’s Next?

If the IHC approves the proposed safety measures and training requirements, 600cc+ motorcycles may soon be permitted back on Pakistan’s motorways. Until then, the ban remains in place, and bikers will need to await official confirmation from the court or motorway authorities.
