NED University Successfully Trials Pakistan’s First Driverless Car - Carr.pk

Engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology have successfully tested Pakistan’s first driverless car, marking a milestone in the country’s automotive innovation.

The self-driving car operated smoothly during its trial run on campus roads, attracting attention from students and visitors.

The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence at NED developed the vehicle over the past year.

The team transformed a China-imported electric car into a fully autonomous system using robotics, advanced sensors, mapping tools, and computer vision. Dr. Muhammad Khurram, project head and director of the Centre, said the car has reached an advanced testing stage.

He explained that engineers have built steering controls with radar and computer vision and are now enhancing object detection, lane recognition, speed-limit identification, and traffic signal interpretation.

The car currently drives at 15–20 km/h and can turn independently while assessing oncoming traffic.

Team member Inzamam Khan added that the system can navigate Pakistan’s challenging roads, including potholes and uneven surfaces, thanks to its high-resolution sensors.
