New passport design, upgraded MyKad with enhanced security features to be introduced within six months

The government will introduce a newly designed passport and MyKad with enhanced security features within six months, reports The Star.
“The new document will be equipped with enhanced security features to preserve the integrity of the passport and address the risk of counterfeiting,” said home minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He added that Malaysia’s passport is currently ranked the third most trusted in the world in terms of visa-free travel convenience, and that is important to maintain that standing and level of trust.
He also noted that despite a new passport and MyKad due to arrive in mid-2026, existing documents will continue to remain valid until their current expiry date. As such, Malaysians do not need to rush to have them replaced immediately.
Additionally, the new MyKad with enhanced security features and new-look passports will not be replaced hastily, as the change is part of a scheduled renewal cycle to ensure a smooth transition. “The MyKad is a security document, and after a certain period its features need to be enhanced in line with technological developments to prevent forgery,” said Saifuddin.
