Oman Accelerates Toward Fully Electric Vehicle Future by 2050 - Carr.pk

Oman has unveiled a bold plan to decarbonize its transport sector, aiming for a fully electric vehicle (EV) fleet by 2050 in line with its Net Zero ambitions.

The strategy, developed by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT), lays out a phased approach to electrifying road transport, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building a robust EV ecosystem.

Transport accounts for nearly 20 percent of Oman’s total carbon emissions, making it a critical sector for the Sultanate’s climate goals. Under the roadmap, new vehicle registrations will steadily shift toward electric models, with clear targets set for 2030, 2040, and 2050.

Phase 1 (2023–2030): Laying the Foundation

By 2030, Oman aims for 25 percent of all new vehicles to be electric. Heavy-duty machinery and buses are targeted for a 40 percent emissions reduction, while biofuels will be introduced for public transport.

To support this transition, the government plans to expand charging infrastructure, including over 350 public charging stations by 2027, featuring high-capacity fast chargers along major highways. Smart apps, standardized charging tariffs, and EV financing schemes will further encourage adoption.

Phase 2 (2031–2040): Scaling Up

The second phase focuses on mass adoption, aiming for more than two-thirds of new vehicles sold to be electric. Public transport depots will increasingly run on solar energy, and hydrogen technology will be piloted for long-haul freight.

Additional measures include expanding EV rental services, establishing the country’s first integrated EV maintenance center, and enhancing consumer support networks.

Phase 3 (2041–2050): Full Decarbonization

By mid-century, Oman plans to ensure all new light vehicles are electric or zero-emission, while heavy transport including trucks and construction equipment, will transition to electric or hydrogen-powered systems. The roadmap positions Oman not only as a leader in clean mobility but also as a hub for green technology and innovation in the region.
