Pakistan Railways Set to Export Coaches and Freight Wagons - Carr.pk

Pakistan Railways is preparing to enter global markets by exporting locally manufactured passenger coaches and freight wagons, marking a major shift in the department’s strategy.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said Pakistan Railways plans to supply rail equipment to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Chile and Nepal. He announced that ambassadors from these countries would visit the Ministry of Railways this week for detailed briefings.

The sessions will focus on manufacturing capacity, technical standards and the range of products available. While export contracts are not final yet, officials see strong interest from potential buyers.

The export plan follows a major financial turnaround at Pakistan Railways. The department earned Rs 10 billion in December 2025, its highest monthly revenue to date. Daily earnings have risen to nearly Rs 300 million, breaking a record that stood for more than 30 years.

Abbasi credited the growth to better passenger services, upgraded facilities and higher public trust. He also pointed to expanded private-sector participation in freight operations.

Officials said modernised carriage factories and workshops have improved quality and reduced production costs. These changes have strengthened Pakistan Railways’ ability to compete internationally.

Abbasi called the export drive a new chapter for the organisation. He said overseas orders could bring in foreign exchange and support long-term financial stability.

The minister added that Pakistan Railways aims to achieve Rs 100 billion in annual revenue during the current financial year. He said upcoming talks with foreign diplomats would help determine the size and timeline of export deals.

If successful, the initiative could position Pakistan Railways as a competitive supplier of rail equipment in global markets.
