Pakistan Railways Launches RAIN Digital Network
Pakistan Railways has launched a major digital upgrade under the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) Project. The initiative marks the largest modernization effort in the department’s history. Authorities have set June 2026 as the completion target for Phase-I.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi reviewed the project during a high-level meeting in Islamabad. The Directorate of IT presented progress details and the rollout plan. Officials confirmed that Pakistan Railways is funding Phase-I entirely through its own revenue.
Under the RAIN Project, Pakistan Railways is installing GPS tracking systems on all trains and locomotives. The system will allow real-time monitoring of train movement. Officials expect it to reduce delays and improve operational safety.
The project also upgrades major railway stations into smart and secure facilities. Pakistan Railways is using the Rawalpindi station as the model. These stations will feature digital passenger displays, smart surveillance, and stronger security systems.
Pakistan Railways will also provide high-speed internet at selected stations. The service will support operations and improve passenger experience.

In addition, the department is setting up command and control centers at the Lahore headquarters and divisional offices. These centers will improve coordination and emergency response.
A key part of the RAIN Project includes laying 1,700 kilometers of fiber optic cable along the ML-1 route. The network will support digital systems across the railway infrastructure.
