Pakistan Railways (PR) is set to manufacture 295 high-capacity wagons locally with support from Chinese experts by March, as part of its plan to modernize its freight and passenger services.

The railway’s factories and workshops in Risalpur and Lahore Mughalpura have been assigned specific production targets to meet this goal.

According to PR General Manager (Manufacturing & Services) Ghulam Qasim, over 170 high-speed passenger coaches, including brake vans, are also planned to be manufactured in Pakistan by June 2027.

“The production of modern wagons and passenger coaches is a key step in upgrading PR’s services. Orders for 820 wagons and 230 coaches were placed around four years ago with Chinese collaboration,” he said.

So far, 200 wagons and 46 passenger coaches were fully built in China and delivered to Pakistan. Meanwhile, PR has produced 325 wagons domestically, including 200 semi-knocked-down and 95 completely knocked-down units.

The locally manufactured wagons include flat container wagons, high-sided open-top wagons, covered wagons, and brake vans.

Chinese engineers have joined Pakistani teams in the carriage factories and workshops to help build the remaining wagons. The production of 295 wagons is scheduled in phases starting November 25 and ending March 30.
