Pelican Signal Installation in Lahore Expands to 20 Busy Roads
Lahore is rolling out modern Pelican signals across the city to boost pedestrian safety and smooth traffic flow under a major infrastructure upgrade led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The initiative follows a successful pilot at Faisal Chowk on Mall Road and has now expanded with installations at Jati Umra Chowk and plans for 20 other key intersections.
Traffic engineers say the new Pelican signal system uses video‑based vehicle detection technology that adapts in real time to changing traffic conditions, helping reduce congestion and improve flow on busy routes. Pedestrians can press a button at crossings to stop vehicles safely, a feature expected to make road travel more orderly and secure.
Major corridors targeted for the Pelican signal rollout include Mall Road points such as GPO, High Court, Regal Chowk and Governor’s House, along with vital arteries like Ferozepur Road, Canal Road Junction and Davis Road. Popular market areas including Barkat Market, Firdous Market and Fortress Stadium will also receive the new signals.
Officials have confirmed that the Pelican signal network will link with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority’s traffic system and help city authorities monitor and manage traffic from a central Urban Traffic Control Center at TEPA Headquarters. Planners believe the project will cut vehicle wait times, reduce carbon emissions and strengthen enforcement with digital coordination across the city.
