Penang Mutiara Line LRT – no road closures this CNY

Main traffic lanes at Penang’s Mutiara Line LRT construction sites will not be closed throughout the festive season, state infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari has said, according to a Bernama report.
He said the project owner and main contractor – respectively MRT Corp and SRS Consortium – assured that road disruptions would be minimised, including during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.
“Any construction works will only be carried out at night and not during peak hours, while for major festive seasons, construction activities are usually stopped temporarily for a day or two, depending on the contractor’s planning,” Zairil said recently.
Regarding traffic management measures instructed by transport minister Anthony Loke, Zairil said the implementation of the plan, which was prepared by MRT Corp, is being constantly monitored and updated monthly in line with the construction phases.
First talked about in 2015, the 29.5-km Mutiara Line LRT will connect Penang’s island and mainland through 21 stations. Its main alignment plan covers the route from the Penang South Reclamation area to Penang Sentral and George Town’s Komtar Station.
