Punjab CM Finalises Basant 2026 with Mandatory Road Safety
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has finalised plans to allow Basant celebrations under strict safety rules. This time, road safety and vehicle protection are central to the policy.
The goal is to revive the cultural festival without repeating the chaos, accidents, and property damage that once turned Basant into a public safety threat.
Strong Focus on Road Safety
The Punjab government has instructed authorities to ensure Basant activities do not disrupt traffic or put motorists at risk. Key measures include:
- Zoning system: Lahore is divided into Red, Yellow, and Green zones for controlled celebrations. Bikers will be allowed to enter the red zone only if their bikes have safety rods ptherise they’ll be fined Rs2,000,
- Strict kite rules: Only nine-thread cotton strings allowed; nylon and metallic strings banned, with penalties of up to five years in jail and a Rs5 million fine
- Enforcement drive: Over 600 FIRs registered, illegal kites seized, and rewards announced for reporting violations. Authorities will closely monitor highways and busy roads and crack down on rooftop kite flying near main roads
- Emergency preparedness: Deployment of 4,000 police personnel, Rescue 1122, fire brigade, ambulances, drones, and round-the-clock control rooms
Why It Matters
For drivers on Lahore’s crowded roads, especially bikers, strict enforcement is critical. Poorly managed Basant celebrations have previously cost lives on roads and rooftops.
A regulated Basant can reduce accidents and protect vehicles and lives from avoidable damage. Safer roads also mean smoother traffic flow during the festive period.
Enforcement Will Decide
Maryam Nawaz has stressed the need for responsible participation to restore Basant as Punjab’s heritage without compromising safety.
The plan relies heavily on coordinated action by police, district administrations, and traffic authorities.
Without zero-tolerance enforcement, the risks could quickly return. Therefore, the real test now lies on the roads.
