Punjab Govt Approves E-Bikes for Excise Department Staff
The Punjab government has approved a plan to provide electric bikes to employees of the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department, signaling a move toward modernized field operations and eco-friendly transportation within government services.
Under the initiative, 200 electric bikes will be procured and distributed to excise inspectors across key districts, including Lahore, according to operational requirements. Officials say the project aims to enhance mobility and efficiency for officers who regularly travel short to medium distances for enforcement and tax-collection duties.
Each electric bike is estimated to cost Rs. 250,000, with the provincial government allocating approximately Rs. 50 million for the project. Procurement and distribution are expected to be completed within the current financial year.
This shift to electric vehicles aligns with broader strategies to reduce recurring fuel costs, cut carbon emissions, and promote sustainable transport in Punjab. Officials believe the move will not only improve field operations but also set an example for other government departments, complementing ongoing initiatives like electric cars and e-bus projects in urban areas.
The initiative has received positive reactions from within the department, with employees noting that electric bikes will make daily field duties more manageable.
