Punjab Govt Rolls Out Major Electric Bus Plan for Twin Cities - Carr.pk

The Punjab government is set to expand its eco-friendly public transport network by launching a new electric bus service linking Gujar Khan with Islamabad from next month.

Under the plan, 15 modern electric buses will operate on the Gujar Khan–T Chowk route, providing commuters with a cleaner and more affordable travel option while easing traffic pressure on the busy corridor.

According to officials, the approved route will begin from Gujar Khan Adda and pass through Mandra before reaching T Chowk, a key gateway to Rawalpindi and Islamabad along the GT Road.

The service will run both ways, offering seamless connectivity for daily travelers heading toward the twin cities. Authorities say this initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve regional mobility through electric buses in Punjab.

Meanwhile, the province has also rolled out more than 15 electric buses in Jhelum city. During the inaugural ceremony, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed that the first phase includes operations on three major routes in the district, with additional buses expected to be introduced next month. He emphasized that improving urban transport remains a top government priority.

In Rawalpindi, the electric bus fleet is also set for major expansion. The number of operational buses will increase from 45 to 80 in the coming months as infrastructure upgrades, including the remodelling of Kutchery Chowk, near completion. Officials report that existing routes are already serving over 26,000 passengers daily, a figure expected to rise once all ten designated routes become active.
