Rawalpindi Formally Activates E-Challan System for Traffic Violations
Following its implementation in Karachi, the e-challan system for traffic violations has been launched in Rawalpindi on November 22, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Safe City Rawalpindi told DAWN. The system is now active with the automated ticketing mechanism linked to the Safe City Command and Control Centre.
2,000 Traffic Cameras: High-Resolution Surveillance Points
As per the new system, vehicle owners will receive e-challans alongside photographic evidence of the violation as well as a code, with fines required to be deposited before the assigned deadline.
As of now, more than 2,000 cameras have been installed at 359 locations across Rawalpindi, with 15 cameras deployed at entry and exit points.
Instant Fines: Seatbelt, Helmet, and Lane Violation Penalties
Since the e-challan system has been integrated with the Safe City Command and Control Centre, automated CCTV cameras will detect violations and issue challans across the city. Traffic signal violations will result in automatic fines, and instant e-challans will also be generated for:
- Motorcyclists without helmets
- Driving without a seatbelt
- Lane violations
- Use of a mobile phone while driving
- Non-standard and/or illegal number plate
As soon as the CCTV cameras capture a violation, a challan will be issued to the vehicle owner and dispatched to their home address.
Additionally, public areas are monitored through the camera network, with traffic management, traffic police performance evaluation, and surveillance of major roads all integrated into the system.
Public Safety and Road Discipline
Ultimately, compliance with these new regulations is not only about avoiding a fine but also a crucial step toward ensuring highly disciplined driving and broader public safety monitoring, aiming to enhance road safety and significantly reduce chaos.
