Rs 7.2 Billion Boost: Rawalpindi Adds Three Underpasses to Signal-Free Connectivity Push
In addition to the recently announced signal-free corridor, Rawalpindi will also see the construction of three new underpasses at the following locations:
- Qasim Market (Rawalpindi)
- Race Course (Rawalpindi)
- Charing Cross (Peshawar Road)
These underpasses are expected to ease congestion at some of the city’s most congested intersections. The total cost of these underpasses is Rs 7.2 billion, with construction slated to begin by late November or early December this year, as reported by Express Tribune.
What They Will Achieve
- Reduced bottlenecks: By eliminating level crossings at critical junctions, these underpasses will help maintain traffic flow without the usual delays caused by signal-controlled intersections.
- Improved safety: By separating different traffic flows, the underpasses will reduce accidents and improve pedestrian safety.
- Comprehensive traffic upgrade: Integrating the underpasses with the larger signal-free corridor ensures a holistic improvement to Rawalpindi’s road network, rather than piecemeal fixes.
Economic and Social Impact
The signal-free corridor and new underpasses are not just ambitious projects aimed at reducing traffic. They also have the potential to drive significant economic benefits:
- Improved business efficiency by reducing delivery and logistics costs, which can lead to lower prices for consumers.
- Enhanced property value, especially in commercial and residential areas near the new underpasses.
- Reduced fuel consumption, improving both travel time and environmental impact.
Construction Risks
As with any large infrastructure project, there are several risks:
- Traffic disruptions: Ongoing construction will affect traffic flow, especially in busy commercial areas such as Qasim Market and Race Course.
- Utility relocation: Managing the shifting of utilities (water, telecom, etc.) will be a logistical challenge.
- Pedestrian access: Ensuring pedestrian and light-vehicle safety during construction will require careful planning.
The Future of the Twin Cities
The Rs 30 billion signal-free corridor and Rs 7.2 billion underpass project mark a significant investment in Rawalpindi and Islamabad’s infrastructure. If completed on time and managed effectively, these projects could transform the region’s traffic landscape, reducing congestion, improving road safety, and stimulating economic growth.
