Rawalpindi to Launch Electric Buses on 10 Routes Next Week
The district administration is set to launch the first phase of electric buses in Rawalpindi, covering 10 key routes across the city. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to inaugurate the service next week, marking a significant step toward improving public transport in the region.
A senior official from the district administration confirmed that a total of 80 electric buses will serve 10 different routes. In the first phase, 45 buses, which arrived last month, are ready to hit the roads next week.
Preparations for the launch are in full swing, with a temporary charging station already set up at the old General Transport Service (GTS) bus stand on Adamjee Road in Saddar.
By the end of December, two more charging stations will be completed at the bus stand on Peshawar Road. Following that, 35 additional buses will be deployed, with a third phase bringing 30 more buses after the completion of work at Kutchery Chowk.
Asad Shirazi, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), stated though the routes were initially finalized, some changes were made due to construction at Kutchery Chowk. Until the chowk is reopened, the electric buses will take alternative routes.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema added that the buses will connect key areas like Rawalpindi Railway Station, the airport, metro bus stations, and other major points in the city.
