Rawalpindi Traders Protest Murree Road Expansion, Warn of ‘Economic Blow.’
Rawalpindi – Rawalpindi traders are in strong protest against the Rawalpindi Development Authority’s (RDA) Rs 9 billion plan to widen the congested 2-kilometre stretch of Murree Road between Liaquat Bagh and Chandni Chowk.
The RDA proposes adding 10 to 15 feet of track and footpaths on both sides to ease severe daily traffic jams. However, the plan requires the demolition of commercial structures and extensive land acquisition.
The Central Traders Association has fiercely rejected the proposal, claiming it was formulated without consulting stakeholders. Association President Sharjeel Mir warned the expansion would “wipe out” 70 to 80 per cent of the commercial zone, labeling the move an “economic blow” to local businesses.
While the RDA seeks better traffic flow, traders argue the project will destroy livelihoods. The fate of the expansion now hangs on approval from the Punjab government amidst significant business community resistance.
