Karachi — In a major boost to the city’s public transportation system, the Sindh Government has announced that double-decker buses will begin operating on the busy Sharea Faisal–Malir route on New Year’s Eve as a special “gift” for Karachi residents.

The launch comes as part of broader efforts to modernize the urban transit network and offer more efficient, comfortable travel options for daily commuters. 

Affordable Travel for All

Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the double-decker buses will operate on a trial basis, running between Sharea Faisal and Malir. Importantly, fares will remain the same as the People’s Bus Service, ensuring the upgrade stays accessible for daily commuters.

Additionally, the government is integrating fare systems across the city’s transport network. Soon, passengers will be able to use a single card across both the Orange Line and Green Line BRT, simplifying transfers and saving time.

Benefits for Commuters and the City

The introduction of double-decker buses brings several advantages:

  • Higher Passenger Capacity: Double-decker buses can carry more commuters per trip, helping reduce overcrowding during peak hours.

Officials also hinted that more buses and additional routes could be added depending on the trial’s success.

Double-decker buses have not been a part of Karachi’s public transport system for decades, with their last widespread use in the mid-20th century. Their return represents a revival of an efficient and iconic transport option, aligning with the city’s vision for a modern transit network.
