Punjab Launches Major Upgrade of Sahiwal–Arifwala–Bahawalnagar Road
The Punjab government has initiated large-scale rehabilitation of the 67.25 km-long Sahiwal–Arifwala–Bahawalnagar Road under the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif Roads Restoration Program, as confirmed by CM Punjab’s X account.
The project aims to transform one of southern Punjab’s key arterial routes, improving connectivity and travel efficiency across the region.

The upgraded road links the southern border districts with the National Highway N-5 and Motorway M-3 through Sahiwal and Pakpattan. N-5 remains Pakistan’s busiest highway, connecting major cities from Karachi to Peshawar, while M-3 plays a crucial role in facilitating high-speed travel between Lahore and Multan.
Beyond mobility, the project is positioned as an economic enabler. The corridor serves agricultural hubs known for wheat, cotton, sugarcane, and livestock production. Smoother road infrastructure is likely to reduce logistics costs and post-harvest losses, offering direct benefits to farmers and traders.
With improved transport reliability, industrial and small-scale manufacturing units in the region may also see growth due to faster movement of goods to central markets and export channels.
The project is expected to benefit more than 8.5 million people across Sahiwal, Arifwala, Bahawalnagar, and adjoining districts. Improved road conditions will not only enhance daily commuting but also support access to education, healthcare, and emergency services.
For motorists and transport operators in southern Punjab, this development signals improved connectivity and long-term economic momentum. Official confirmation on completion schedules is awaited.
