Sikh Riders Exempted From Strict Helmet Rule in Punjab After Maryam Nawaz Decision - Carr.pk

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a targeted exemption from the province’s motorcycle helmet requirement for members of the Sikh community, citing religious practice and practical concerns about wearing helmets over turbans during a Christmas event in Lahore, according to The Nation. The decision responds to requests from Sikh leaders and aims to balance road safety with respect for religious identity.

Why Won’t Sikh Motorcyclists Get Fined?

The new exemption specifically acknowledges the dastar or turban as an article of faith within Sikhism, deeply tied to identity and practice.

Under current traffic regulations in Pakistan, motorcyclists are required to wear helmets to reduce the risk of head injuries and fatalities. PakWheels has extensively covered safety rules, including past efforts to enforce helmet use on major city routes.

Minority Card Scheme Changes

Alongside the helmet exemption, Maryam Nawaz announced key welfare measures for minority communities, including expanding the Minority Card scheme from 75,000 to 100,000 beneficiaries. Officials also pledged to resolve longstanding issues related to minority graveyards across Punjab and reaffirmed zero tolerance for discrimination or abuse against religious minorities.

In her Instagram post, CM Maryam Nawaz stated that “…Pakistan is complete only when we stand together with our minorities. Minorities are a valuable asset and a source of pride for our country.”

Road Safety and Legal Considerations

Traffic safety advocates have long stressed that helmet use drastically cuts the likelihood of severe head injuries in motorcycle crashes. While this policy carve-out is framed as a religious accommodation, its implementation could raise questions about enforcement and overall road safety strategy across the province.
