SmartLanes on highways are safer for motorists; accident rates reduced since activation – Nanta

Accident rates in SmartLane zones are “extremely low” when compared to the number of vehicles which use the lane, said works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, reported The Star. An analysis on various SmartLane locations have revealed a sharp reduction in the number of accidents in comparison to the period prior to SmartLane activation, said the works minister.

Citing the example of the SmartLane from Putra Mahkota to Southville, the stretch had recorded a 22% reduction in accidents, while the SmartLane from R&R Rawang to the Rawang interchange recorded a 74% reduction in accidents, Nanta said.

The majority of accidents which occurred in SmartLanes are not due to road design, but human error, he added. “This includes speeding in smart lanes, changing lanes dangerously without providing any signal indicator and using the SmartLane outside of its operation hours,” he said.

Safety patrols are carried out highway concessionaire and Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) personnel prior to SmartLane activation, which is to ensure that there are no disruptions before lane is opened for use.

“LLM and highway concessionaires also work closely with the police and road transport department to ensure heavy vehicles do not use the SmartLanes,” Nanta said, adding that safety audits are carried out periodically at all SmartLane locations.
