Tesla Launches Cheaper AWD Model Y in US - Carr.pk

Tesla has quietly added a new all-wheel drive (AWD) variant of its best-selling Model Y SUV in the United States, priced at $41,990 (around PKR 11.8 million). The move offers buyers a more affordable AWD option, sitting just above the rear-wheel drive (RWD) base model that starts at $39,990.

According to Reuters and official company data, this trim adjustment is part of Tesla’s strategy to maintain demand as U.S. federal EV tax credits expired in late 2023. In response, Tesla has trimmed prices across its Model 3 and Model Y lineups  in some cases by up to $5,000.

Why It Matters Globally and Locally

Tesla’s updated pricing comes amid softening EV demand and growing competition from Chinese automakers and legacy brands. Lower-cost trims help Tesla appeal to a broader market without needing to launch an entirely new vehicle platform.

Key implications:

  • U.S. buyers get a cheaper AWD Tesla without sacrificing key features.
  • Pakistan’s EV importers may see more demand for the Model Y in grey markets.
  • Local listings still reflect high landed prices due to import duties.

In Pakistan, imported Tesla Model Ys including older 2023 trims  are currently listed at PKR 30–35 million, depending on specs and customs-related costs.

What’s Next?

Tesla’s pricing update reflects its shifting focus: fewer premium trims, more volume-driven pricing, and expansion into software and services. CEO Elon Musk has also hinted at freeing up production lines for future non-automotive projects.

For Pakistani buyers, direct price cuts abroad don’t yet translate to affordability due to high duties. Still, grey-market importers may adjust offers based on U.S. prices, especially if dollar parity stabilizes.
