NDMA Issues Travel Advisory for December 13-18 Amid Weather Risks - Carr.pk

NDMA’s latest projection warns of a shifting winter spell that can change road conditions quickly. Light to moderate rain in parts of the north, snowfall over hilly areas, and fog during morning/night in Sindh.

In plain terms: the same route that feels “fine” at noon can turn into low-visibility fog, slick rain, or slushy patches within an hour or two.

That’s why the safest approach isn’t memorizing long multiple tips. It’s adopting a simple mindset: drive slower than usual, increase your space, and prioritize visibility.

Below is a short, practical set of precautions that covers most real-world situations drivers face in this kind of weather.

1) Plan Your Trip Smartly Before You Leave

If you’re travelling toward hilly or northern areas where rain or snow is expected, assume delays and occasional road disruptions. Leave earlier, keep your fuel above half, and avoid night driving in the mountains when possible.

In Sindh, where fog is expected in the morning and night, the best “precaution” is simply timing: travel mid-day if you can.

2) Drive Slower Than Normal

In fog or heavy rain, many crashes happen because drivers go faster than what they can actually see.

  • Use low beams, as high beams make fog glare worse.
  • Slow down until you can stop fully within the visible distance.
  • If visibility becomes seriously poor, pull off at a safe stop. Do not use the roadside shoulder unless it’s an emergency.

3) Keep Extra Following Distance

Whether it’s rain in Pothohar, snow in the hills, or fog in Sindh, the winning move is the same:

  • Increase the following distance a lot more than normal.
  • Brake early and gently. Avoid sudden steering.
  • Don’t overtake unless you have clear visibility.

4) Keep Ride Slow, Smooth, and Steady In Snow

With snow expected over hilly areas and light rain/snow around Murree/Galiyat, treat every shaded corner and bridge like it may be slippery.

  • Use slow, steady inputs (accelerate/brake/steer gently).
  • Downhill: Use a lower gear, so you’re not riding the brakes.
  • If you’re going where snow is likely, carry snow chains for tyres.

5) 60-Second Car Check Before Departure

Most winter breakdowns come from small neglect, not dramatic weather. So make sure you follow the following simple checkup before heading to the road:

  • Tyre treads are not worn out

A quick check: if the grooves look shallow/smooth, or the tyre looks “bald” on edges, it’s risky in wet weather.

  • Tyre pressure affects grip and braking, so make sure it’s neither too low on pressure nor too overinflated.
  • Ensure your wipers are not worn out and that the washer fluid is full to keep the windscreen clear.
  • Headlights are working and clean
  • Phone charged/power bank in case of delays or emergencies

Closing note

NDMA’s projection is basically a reminder that winter hazards don’t arrive with a warning horn, but rather, they build quietly. Visibility drops, the road gets slick, and a sudden brake sets off a chain reaction.

Drive like the road will surprise you, and you’ll usually be right. So make sure you are well prepared always when you head out on the road.
